    Is Santa Real?

The question, Is Santa Real, rings through the holiday season with the Christmas carols, and just like the icicles hanging from our rooftops, sends a shiver down our spines. We can stall, ignore or sugarcoat our answers; however these futile attempts to side-step the issue rarely satisfy the insatiable curiosity of a child.

    Polish Your Skin

The temperatures rose enough for me to peel off my socks, and at the same time, the sun was bright enough for me to see an avalanche of dry, flaky, under-moisturized skin.  Spring, I hope, will arrive, and it will take every one of the days leading up to warmth to get my alligator skin ready for sandals. My second incentive for paying some extra attention to my skin is this:  I’m heading to a ball on Valentine’s Day, complete with fancy dresses and tuxedos and grownups.  Luckily, my dry skin recipe is simple, cheap and luxurious. The exfoliate part is a simple scrub that brushes away dead skin, and…

Comfort Food — Because We’re Stressed

Yes, it’s winter. Yes, we’re tired of of being cold.  Simple rituals, like reading the morning paper, which is full of doom and gloom, need to be replaced with more nurturing ones.  My 7th grader is facing one of his toughest academic weeks yet, my first grader is suffering from penmanship burnout, (yes, this does appear to be his best work). My husband is traveling and dining out more than ever with clients, and there’s no partner adult in site to get me through the witching hours. The thread between after school and the morning alarm is somehow frighteningly shorter than I can ever remember.  We’re staying up way too…

Making Compost In a Plastic Bag with Leaves

With the economy so tough, it’s satisfying to make something so valuable that requires such a small financial investment. Why let the city get all of your soil-boosting raw materials? They’ll just turn it into compost themselves, and then make you pay for it next Spring when you buy your mulch. It’s not hard, or too time consuming, to keep some of the leaves for yourself and turn it into compost. Don’t worry if you missed your chance this fall. Some trees save their big drop for the Spring. Last Spring, at the lake, the trees left us with over 120 black plastic bags of fallen leaves that spiraled like…

    How to Roast Pumpkin Seeds

This is the snack you want sitting on your counter on trick or treat night for the kids. Pumpkin Seeds, Pepitas, are loaded with protein, zinc, magnesium, manganese, phosphorus and phytosterols — good stuff that boost your immune system. Pumpkin seeds, also known as pepitas, are at their nutritional best when eaten raw. Still, eating them roasted is a treat you’ll savor until next Halloween. Here is how to roast pumpkin seeds: Ingredients: 1 1/2 cups raw pumpkin seeds 2 teaspoons butter, melted 1 pinch of salt, optional. I have one who insists: NO SALT As you carve your pumpkins, scoop out the inside goop with the seeds. Rinse seeds,…

    Vibrant Colored Playdough Recipe

This cooked play dough recipe makes a soft, pliable dough that kids, and Moms, can’t keep stop playing with.  The addition of Kool-Aid adds vibrant color, (richer than you’ll get with food coloring) and a yummy scent.  Cooked playdough lasts longer than the traditional uncooked method. Plus, adding a drop of Lavender Oil to the mix helps preserve the play dough, and of course,  makes it smell AWESOME! Note: Add texture to your play dough by kneading in glitter, confetti, lentils, rice or whatever cool stuff is in season. I have two versions here: the large batch, and the average-sized bath. First, the large batch Play dough version: 2 cups…
