Be Still, Advent Day 19: Shine Your Light

“Arise, shine, for your light has come, and the glory of the Lord has risen upon you” (Isaiah 60:1)

It happens quietly, almost unnoticed. The first Advent candle flickers in the dark, its flame delicate yet certain. It doesn’t shout its presence; it simply glows. And isn’t that the call of Advent? To be a light in the waiting, a steady flame in the deepening night?

Advent comes to whisper what the world often forgets: You are the light of the world. Yes, you. With your imperfections and worries, your worn-thin days and weary nights, you carry the glow of something eternal. Not because you’re perfect, but because God has placed His light within you.

A Light Planted in the Darkness

Advent is the season when the darkness feels long, but the promise of light is even longer. The prophet Isaiah reminds us, “… the glory of the Lord has risen upon you” . God doesn’t just give us light; He invites us to be light. To rise when the world feels heavy. To shine when the days feel short.

But maybe you wonder, What can my little light do? It’s easy to feel small in a world that clamors for the big, the bold, the impressive. Yet the first Advent flame reminds us that even a single light changes the room. You don’t need to have it all figured out; you just need to be willing to burn bright with the love of Christ.

Shine Bright

Jesus tells us plainly: “Let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven” (Matthew 5:16). Do you see it? Your light isn’t for your glory. It’s not about applause or recognition. It’s about reflecting the One who gave you the flame in the first place.

So, this Advent, don’t hide your light under the bushel of insignificance or fear. Don’t let comparison snuff it out. God made you to shine—uniquely, beautifully, boldly. He planted His light in you not so it could be hidden, but so it could illuminate the world around you.

Lighting the World with Small Acts of Love

Maybe shining your light looks like writing a kind note, sharing a warm meal, or offering a listening ear. Maybe it’s forgiving someone who doesn’t deserve it, or showing up for someone who feels forgotten. These aren’t grand gestures, but they’re the kind of acts that warm the cold corners of the world.

In Advent, we prepare for the Light of the World by being light ourselves. Small sparks can grow into flames. And before you know it, a single candle becomes a roaring fire.

The Candle That Refuses to Burn Out

And the Advent light? it’s not fueled by your strength. It’s fueled by His. Paul reminds us, “For God… has shone in our hearts to give the light of the knowledge of the glory of God in the face of Jesus Christ” (2 Corinthians 4:6). The light you carry is eternal, unshakeable, unstoppable.

Even when the night feels long, even when your flame flickers, the source of your light is steady. God Himself fans the flame within you, reminding you that the light shines in the darkness, and the darkness cannot overcome it (John 1:5).

An Invitation to Shine

This Advent, let your light shine. Not in striving, but in surrender. Not by forcing brightness, but by simply being who God made you to be: a bearer of His glory, a spark in the waiting, a reflection of His love.

Light your candle, beloved, and let it glow. The world may feel dark, but your light is proof that the story isn’t over. The King is coming, and with Him, the dawn.

So shine. Shine with joy, shine with hope, shine with love. Shine, because His light has come, and it’s burning within you. Rejoice, for the night is almost over.
