Be Still, Advent Day 10: What To Do With Despair
“Nothing will be impossible with God.” (Luke 1:37)
“The Lord is my light and my salvation; whom shall I fear?” (Psalm 27:1)
“The vision awaits its appointed time… if it seems slow, wait for it; it will surely come; it will not delay.” (Habakkuk 2:3)
Despair thrives in the gap between what we want and what we see.
You pray, but nothing changes. The Bible teaches us to have faith in the Goodness of God—but what does that even look like?
Faith isn’t the absence of doubt; it’s the refusal to let doubt have the final word.
Turning despair into faith doesn’t happen all at once. It has a rhythm. Just like it was for Joshua when he marched around Jericho. One step at a time.
Some days will feel slow, like you’re going in circles.
Faith-building is a process:
- Step 1: Acknowledge the wall. It’s okay to feel the weight of it.
- Step 2: Shift your focus from the wall to God.
- Step 3: Trust that God is working, even in silence.
Despair grows louder when you face the wall alone. But God invites you into a different narrative:
Your Wall Isn’t a Sign to Stop—It’s a Chance to Trust
You think your wall is a sign from God to turn around. God is calling you to a deeper opportunity—a call to trust Him more deeply.
Therefore, the question isn’t why the wall is there but what God wants to do through it.
The Dance of Faith: Context and Conflict
Jericho was massive. Its walls were fortified and impenetrable. The Israelites stood before it with a promise:
“I have delivered Jericho into your hands” (Joshua 6:2).
But days passed. They marched, they waited, and the walls didn’t move.
The conflict was clear: Do they trust God’s promise or interpret the silence as a sign to quit?
They chose to trust. Therefore, the walls fell—not by force, but by faith.
Faith’s Rhythm: Silence, Steps, and Breakthrough
Faith often has a rhythm, doesn’t it? Jericho’s story follows a clear one:
- Silence: Six days of marching, no visible progress.
- Steps: Obedient action, even when it seemed futile.
- Breakthrough: God’s timing, God’s power.
Turning despair into faith isn’t about pretending everything’s fine. It’s about taking your doubts to God and trusting Him to transform them.
When the walls in our lives don’t budge, it’s easy to let despair set in. But what if the silence is part of the process? Just as the Israelites walked in trust, we’re called to keep moving forward, believing God’s promise is bigger than our problem.
Look at David in Psalm 42:11:
“Why are you cast down, O my soul? And why are you in turmoil within me? Hope in God; for I shall again praise him, my salvation and my God.”
It’s okay to feel the weight of the wall. But don’t stay there. Let God carry it for you.
Shift Your Focus
Despair fixates on the wall. Faith lifts its eyes to God. Psalm 121:1–2 says:
“I lift up my eyes to the hills. From where does my help come? My help comes from the Lord, who made heaven and earth.”
Stop staring at the problem and start gazing at the Problem-Solver. The Israelites knew their wall was big, but they trusted their God was bigger. When Moses faced the Red Sea, he declared:
“The Lord will fight for you; you need only to be still.” (Exodus 14:14)
Remember God’s Faithfulness
When David faced Goliath, he didn’t despair. Why? Because he remembered how God had delivered him before:
“The Lord who rescued me from the paw of the lion and the paw of the bear will rescue me from the hand of this Philistine.” (1 Samuel 17:37)
Reflect on what God has already done in your life. If He was faithful then, He’ll be faithful now.
Speak God’s Promises
Faith comes by hearing (Romans 10:17). Despair silences hope, but God’s Word speaks life. Find Scriptures that declare His power:
- ““Why are you cast down, O my soul? … Hope in God; for I shall again praise Him” (Psalm 42:5)
- “Do not merely listen to the word, and so deceive yourselves. Do what it says” (James 1:22).
- “Remember the wonders He has done, His miracles, and the judgments He pronounced” (1 Chronicles 16:12).
When despair says, “Stop,” faith says, “Take one more step.”
Tone: Real Talk About Real Struggles
A New Way to See Despair
Despair often feels like the final chapter. But from God’s perspective, it’s just the introduction to His power. Like the Israelites marching around Jericho, your faith and persistence lays the groundwork for God’s glory to be revealed.
Despair isn’t a sign you’ve failed. It’s an opportunity to lean into God’s strength. What if your greatest moment of doubt is actually your greatest opportunity for faith?
A New Perspective on Walls
You don’t break walls by staring at them. You break them by trusting the One who can.
