Moses’ Identity Crisis
“But Moses said to God, ‘Who am I that I should go to Pharaoh, and bring the Israelites out of Egypt?’ He said, ‘I will be with you; and this shall be the sign for you that it is I who sent you: when you have brought the people out of Egypt, you shall worship God on this mountain.’”
New Testament Wisdom: Strength in Weakness
“But he said to me, ‘My grace is sufficient for you, for power is made perfect in weakness.’ So, I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may dwell in me.”
Both Moses and Paul ask the same question — and it’s one I’m sure we ask ourselves — a little too often: “Who am I to …” Both men wrestled with their identity and self-worth. Paul found his power in his weakness, by letting Christ dwell within. We ask the same question — even when it comes to something as simple as getting dressed. Stylist Allison Bornstein may have the answer for us. Her famous fashion approach is based on style and fashion at its core. I don’t think she intended for it to be a spiritual exercise — but it certainly is, as its core.
Faith and Fashion: There’s A Connection
Bornstein, author of the book Wear It Well, advocates a Three-Word Style Method that, although designed for fashion, can — if you stick with me — bring profound spiritual insights. If you’re one of those people like me who is always wondering what to wear — you’ll love this method for the clarity and simplicity it brings you when it comes to getting dressed. The hard part is defining your three words up front. Once that is done, things begin to fall into place. This method involves defining our personal style using three words: one practical, one aspirational, and one emotional. These words reflect who we are, who we are becoming, and how we want to present ourselves to the world.
“Who are you today? Who are you becoming? And how do you want to show up in the world?”
OK — So let’s get dressed!
Step 1: The Practical Word – Where You Are Now
Your first word describes your current reality. What you wear daily reflects your lifestyle, responsibilities, and comforts. Maybe it’s “classic,” “casual,” or “functional.” This word acknowledges where you are without judgment. Like Moses, who felt unworthy and unqualified, your practical word reminds you to start with what’s already in your hands. God’s response to Moses wasn’t a critique of his limitations; it was a promise: “I will be with you” (Exodus 3:12). Your first word grounds you in that same truth—God is present in your now. Here’s a way you could envision this within your wardrobe!

Step 2: The Aspirational Word – Who You Are Becoming
Your aspirational word points toward the person you’re growing into. It’s about trusting in God’s ongoing transformation. It’s a reflection of hope and growth. Words like “confident,” “radiant,” or “elegant” capture the person you’re becoming through God’s grace. Paul reminds us in 2 Corinthians 12:9 that God’s grace works through us, shaping us into more than we could ever imagine on our own. Your aspirational word isn’t about striving; it’s about trusting God’s ongoing transformation in your life.
Here’s how it could look in the real-world practical life:

Step 3: The Emotional Word – How You Want to Feel
The final word is the heart of this method. It’s not about trends or external approval; it’s about how you embody God’s presence in your life. Perhaps it’s “peaceful,” “bold,” or “joyful.” This word reminds you that your beauty is more than skin deep. Like Moses and Paul, whose strength came from God’s presence, your third word reflects the inner work God is doing in you. It’s what lingers after you leave the room—the love, kindness, or courage you share with others.

Bringing It All Together
The beauty of the Three-Word Style Method lies in its ability to align your outer expression with your inner transformation. Your three words—practical, aspirational, and emotional—become a reflection of God’s presence in your life. When you embrace your three words, you step into the fullness of who God created you to be.
“Your third word? That’s where God’s fingerprint shines the brightest.”
You are meant to shine. Like Moses, you may feel unqualified, and like Paul, you may feel weak. But your identity is rooted in God’s promises. As you choose your three words, let them guide not only your wardrobe but also your heart. True beauty comes from living with intention and grace.
