Be Still, Advent Day 14: Erasing Your Worries with God’s Word

Rewriting Your Mind with God’s Word: A Guide to Activating Your RAS

Your mind is a beautiful, God-designed filter—your Reticular Activation System (RAS)—and it’s always working. It’s the way your brain decides what to focus on, what to notice, what to filter out. What you repeat to yourself, what you focus on, what you dwell on—this is what shapes your reality. And God, in His infinite wisdom, built this into us so that His Word, when soaked into the deep places, can transform us from the inside out.

Each of us is uniquely made, and every situation calls for different approaches, but when it comes to anchoring your heart in God’s truth, here are some go-to remedies for activating your RAS with Scripture and worship. Try them all; find what speaks to your soul. Let this be your toolbox for finding peace, clarity, and hope in God’s presence.

1. Write His Word by Hand: Let the Truth Flow Through Your Pen

When you write scripture by hand, something extraordinary happens. Studies show that writing activates parts of the brain connected to memory and focus, creating stronger neural connections than simply reading or typing. God made your mind to absorb truth in layers, and there’s something sacred about the act of writing His promises slowly, deliberately.

Take a verse like “The Lord is my shepherd; I lack nothing” (Psalm 23:1), and write it out. Then, make it personal: “The Lord is Susie’s shepherd; Susie lacks nothing.” Write it again and again, letting the truth sink into your heart. Write it in a journal, on sticky notes, or a scrap of paper in your pocket. The rhythm of pen to paper rewires your brain toward trust.

2. Listen to Scripture: Let His Word Wash Over You

Record yourself reading scripture aloud. There’s power in hearing the Word spoken in your own voice—it makes the promises personal, intimate. Play it back as you fold laundry, drive, or prepare a meal. Or, listen to others read scripture—find audio Bibles or scripture playlists that speak to your heart. (Pro tip: YouVersion and Bible Gateway are excellent sources for audio scripture.)

Let verses like “Be still, and know that I am God” (Psalm 46:10) or “You will keep in perfect peace those whose minds are steadfast, because they trust in you” (Isaiah 26:3) play softly in the background. Even when you’re not actively listening, your brain is soaking in the truth, reshaping your thoughts toward God’s peace.

3. Memorize His Promises: Let the Truth Reside in You

There’s a quiet power in memorization—tucking God’s Word deep into the corners of your mind where it can surface when you need it most. Start small. Choose one verse that resonates with your current season and repeat it throughout the day.

Verses like “I can do all things through Christ who strengthens me” (Philippians 4:13) or “Do not be anxious about anything” (Philippians 4:6) become anchors in the storm when they’re written on the tablet of your heart. The act of memorization trains your RAS to prioritize these truths, drowning out fear and doubt with God’s unchanging promises.

4. Praise Through Music: Let Worship Lead the Way

Your RAS is powerfully influenced by emotions, and worship music engages both your heart and mind. Play songs that declare God’s goodness, truth, and faithfulness. Sing along, even if softly, letting the words move through you.

Songs like “Great Is Thy Faithfulness” or “Waymaker” become more than melodies—they become declarations of trust, rewiring your focus toward God’s presence. As you sing, imagine the end result of God’s promises: peace, healing, restoration. Praise tunes your RAS to look for His hand in every situation.

5. Visualize His Promises: See Yourself Living in His Truth

Close your eyes and imagine God’s promises unfolding in your life. Picture yourself walking confidently because “The Lord is my light and my salvation—whom shall I fear?” (Psalm 27:1). Visualize the freedom that comes from “Come to me, all you who are weary and burdened, and I will give you rest” (Matthew 11:28).

Visualization isn’t just positive thinking—it’s faith in action. It allows your mind to rehearse God’s truth, making it easier to live out in reality. Let your imagination become a canvas for His promises.

6. Repeat and Reflect: The Power of Repetition

Repetition isn’t just for memorization—it’s for transformation. Repeating a verse aloud or to yourself throughout the day trains your RAS to prioritize it. Start your morning with “His mercies are new every morning” (Lamentations 3:23). Whisper it when anxiety creeps in. Say it aloud as you drift to sleep.

Repetition rewires your brain, turning God’s promises into the default setting of your mind.

7. Anchor in Gratitude and Prayer

Gratitude is the lens that reframes your day. Start small: “Thank You, Lord, for breath. For sunlight. For Your unchanging love.” Gratitude tunes your RAS to notice blessings instead of burdens. Pair it with prayer—raw, honest, and unfiltered. God isn’t put off by your fears; He invites them.

Let verses like “Give thanks in all circumstances” (1 Thessalonians 5:18) become your anthem, and watch as your heart begins to shift.

8. Try Movement and Creation: Engage Your Body in Worship

For some, movement activates focus. Go for a walk and speak verses aloud, letting your steps echo their rhythm. Create something—a painting, a piece of art, or even a meal—and dedicate it as an act of worship. God designed you uniquely, and sometimes your RAS is most activated when your hands are busy.

Each Mind Is Unique, Each Challenge Different

God made you intricately and wonderfully (Psalm 139:14). What works for one heart may not work for another, and what helps in one season may not in the next. These are tools, not rules. Use them as needed, as led, as your heart requires.

The beauty of activating your RAS with Scripture is this: it’s not about striving; it’s about soaking. It’s about letting the Word saturate your thoughts, turning your mind toward Him until His promises become your reality. Try one, try all, and find the rhythm that draws you closest to the One who never lets you go.
