A Recipe for Freedom

Ingredients Needed:

What You’ll Need to Begin

A mirror you’ve avoided for weeks—maybe months.
The kind that shows more than your face.

One crumpled receipt from a day you wish you could redo.
Doesn’t matter what you bought. It’s the heaviness that matters.

The weight of a promise you broke to yourself.
Still carrying it. Still counting.

An old voicemail you can’t delete—
the version of you that didn’t know better yet.

Some people say you need to earn it, to suffer first—
but I don’t.
What matters is the tender acknowledgment,
the quiet I’m sorry you whisper to yourself.

The name of someone you hurt without meaning to.
Or the name of someone who hurt you—and you still blame yourself.

A list of all the ways you think you’ve failed.
Read once. Then burned, or buried, or let go.

Silence—the specific kind that comes after you stop defending yourself
to the jury in your head.

Jesus forgave from the cross before anyone asked.
Maybe that’s the point—grace arrives before we’re ready.

And last—gently—
forty days of your own mercy, offered without earning it.

That’s all.
Simple in the way release is simple.
Difficult in the way compassion is difficult.
And if you open it—
just for a moment—
you might find the forgiveness you’ve been rationing
was always meant for you.

The Self-Forgiveness Journal for Lent arrives this season. Not to fix you. To meet you.
