Stressed Out

It’s hard, when the Spotify channel blares from the phone they carry from room to room throughout the house, to ignore the words that come out of that tiny speaker. Almost piercing, with direct stabs, getting to the truth of what is happening, and what we actively, silently trying to push aside, as we wash their socks, cook their meals, pick up their jackets…

…But it would remind us of when nothing really mattered,

Out of student loans and treehouse homes we all would take the latter.

….
Wish we could turn back time, to the good ol’ days,
When our momma sang us to sleep but now we’re stressed out.

We used to play pretend, give each other different names,
We would build a rocket ship and then we’d fly it far away,
Used to dream of outer space but now they’re laughing at our face,
Saying, “wake up, you need to make money.”

Wish we could turn back time, to the good ol’ days,
When our momma sang us to sleep but now we’re stressed out.

How, can you not hear those words, clear as a bell, and not remember that blissful winter day when the new refrigerator box became a Batman Spaceship, and their little chubby bodies giggled, so intently, for hours on end?
