Ladies, It’s Time For Your Holiday De-Stressor

My favorite holiday classic movie, The Bishop’s Wife, (Cary Grant, David Niven and Loretta Young) is one that often gets lost among the traditional holiday classics: It’s A Wonderful Life, White Christmas and Elf, (that is a classic now, right?)

Family movie, this is not. Unlike the movies listed above, The Bishop’s wife gives you an almost sinister romance, sprinkled with laughter, some danger, and the every-present struggle of being human. And there just happens to be a Christmas tree, but that’s totally beside the point.

The Bishop’s Wife is the perfect Saturday-before-Christmas indulgence. Wrapping presents, drinking a warm latte, the Christmas tree aglow… and Cary Grant.

I start out with the wrapping paper, boxes, scissors and ribbon neatly lined up on the floor, the Christmas lights glowing, my mug full of nice warm drink, but by the end of the movie, my tools are still lined up, and gifts unwrapped. The problem? I couldn’t take my eyes off the twinkling eyes of Cary Grant as he, as an almost devilish angel,  maneuvers his way into the lives (in often surprising ways) of everyone he meets.

This movie is the perfect cure for the holiday-rush-I’m-not-going-to-get-it-all-done feeling. Indulge yourself in that glorious black-and-white film, chick-flick style, and let Cary entertain you. Don’t you wish you could stop and ice skate on your way home from Target, like Loretta Young did?

  1. Very Cute! I admit it – my guilty Christmas classic isn’t any of these… it’s National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation! LOL! We watch it EVERY Christmas Eve!
